India’s long wait for the 50-over ICC trophy ended after the team defeated New Zealand to win the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. India played like Champions and didn’t drop a game, winning the tournament undefeated. It was a collective effort which led the team to glory. The likes of Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul held fort for the team in the league stages and the captain Rohit Sharma brought out his best on the big day. He played a magnificent innings of 76 in the final to help India chase 252 on a tricky surface. The spinners were brilliant throughout.

Rohit Sharma Creates History

The 76-run knock by Rohit Sharma helped the Indian captain etch his name in record books. Rohit was adjudged the player of the match (POTM) for his stunning knock and he became the oldest player in the world to win a POTM award in an ICC ODI tournament final. He is the only player to win the POTM award in the ICC ODI tournament final after turning 37.

  • 37y 313d – Rohit Sharma
  • 35y 165d – Adam Gilchrist – AUS vs SL In ODI World Cup 2007
  • 32y 274d – Mohinder Amarnath IND vs WI In 1983 World Cup
  • 30y 294d – Clive Lloyd WI vs AUS In 1975 World Cup

Rohit Sharma also became only the fourth captain to win the POTM in an ICC ODI final after Clive Lloyd, Ricky Ponting, and MS Dhoni. Rohit is the only captain in the world to lead a team into the final of all major ICC tournaments.

Rohit Sharma Ends Retirement Rumours

Meanwhile, there were speculations that Rohit Sharma might retire after the Champions Trophy but the Indian captain confirmed that he is far from over. “I am not going to retire,” the skipper said after India beat New Zealand in the final.

“One more thing. I’m not going to retire from this format, just to make sure that no rumours are spread moving forward,” Rohit, who led India to four ICC trophy finals, including two titles, declared.
