OpenAI has said that access to ChatGPT has mostly been restored after the widely popular AI tool stopped working for many users across the world early on Friday, December 27.
ChatGPT’s developer API (application programming interface) and the startup’s newly launched AI video generator Sora were also down for a couple of hours.
“We are currently experiencing an issue with high error rates on ChatGPT, the API, and Sora,” OpenAI posted on its official status page, adding that the outage was caused by an “upstream provider”.
A few users reported seeing an “internal server error” message after they typed in their prompts on the ChatGPT platform.
As of 7:34am on Friday, OpenAI has confirmed that Sora and the API access to ChatGPT are fully operational. It further said that it is continuing to work on an overall fix for ChatGPT.
Around the same time as the ChatGPT outage, Microsoft reported that one of its data centres in the US experienced a “power incident”. Though, it is unclear if the two incidents are linked. For context, the Redmond-based tech giant is not only a major investor in OpenAI but also acts as its exclusive cloud service provider.
“There was a power incident in the South Central US AZ03 which affected multiple services. We have applied mitigation and are actively validating recovery to the impacted services. Further updates will be provided in 60 minutes, or sooner as events warrant,” Microsoft said, later adding that power has been “fully restored” to the affected data centre.
