After leaving the smartphone market in 2021, LG is planning to make a comeback in this market. As reported by Android Police, LG plans to launch an artificial intelligence (AI) smartphone. The South Korean brand is not alone in this initiative; it will be collaborating with Samsung to bring an AI smartphone. Here’s a detailed look at what these tech giants are cooking!
LG and Samsung Plan to Bring an AI Smartphone: Details
After struggling with bad reviews and failing to attract a large customer base, LG left the smartphone market. After that, the South Korean brand entered into display and other ventures. But now it is all set to re-enter with a new plan. According to The Korean Economic Daily (via Sammobile), LG Uplus has collaborated with Samsung to develop a smartphone focused on AI, specifically an AI-based voice assistant called ixi-O. Notably, LG Uplus is LG’s telecom arm.
The two companies plan to make a ‘real AI phone’ that is ‘more than just integrating AI assistant services’ into a smartphone. Earlier this month, LG introduced ixi-O as a personal AI agent. However, this AI agent was only available in Korea. But what is this AI agent, and how can it help you? ixi-O has the ability to detect voice phishing in real time, answer calls, record and summarize calls. In addition, the AI agent can also turn voice conversations into text, and that too in real time.
The new AI smartphone could be named the Galaxy ixi-O. This upcoming phone will focus on combining ixi-O (LG Uplus’s AI call assistant) with Samsung’s AI service, Galaxy AI. However, as of now, the device may only be available to LG Uplus users. Furthermore, similar AI services are expected to roll out to other mobile carriers in South Korea in the future.
The Future Roadmap
Looking ahead, LG and Samsung are expected to showcase the phone, in addition to the Galaxy S25 series, which is reported to launch on January 22, 2025. LG could also brief the public on its future plans for expanding its AI-powered business. The AI phone is expected to hit the market by Q1 2025. But, as speculations suggest, the ‘AI smartphone’ might not be rolled out for the US and global markets.
