Microsoft finally introduces this ‘much-needed’ feature to its 41-year-old software

Microsoft appears to be on a spree to modernise every app it offers on the Windows platform. The company has already updated most of its apps and services with its latest design language and new features. And, the latest one that’s getting an update is Notepad, an app that was introduced around 41 years ago.

As a part of the update, Notepad is getting the much-needed spell-check feature that’s set to arrive later this year to all users on Windows 11.

The feature is currently rolling out in the Windows Insider Preview build and for users who are running the beta version of the Windows 11 operating system.

The spell check feature in Notepad mirrors the functionality of popular word processors, like Microsoft Word, and web browsers such as Microsoft Edge. Misspelled words are flagged with a red underline, prompting users to make corrections with a simple right-click for suggested alternatives.

Notepad also incorporates autocorrect, fixing errors in real-time as users type. This feature extends to multiple languages, ensuring accuracy across diverse linguistic contexts.

Users have the flexibility to customize spell-check preferences globally or for specific file types, offering a tailored editing experience. However, spell check is disabled by default for coding-related file types like log files, recognizing the unique needs of coding environments.

Notepad’s recent updates include character count tracking and an autosave option, streamlining document management. Additionally, Microsoft has introduced modern features like dark mode, tab support, and AI integration, alongside playful additions such as a virtual fidget spinner.
