Officially confirmed: OnePlus 12R comes with UFS 3.1 storage, not UFS 4.0

OnePlus has officially confirmed that its latest budget flagship, the 256 GB variant of the OnePlus 12R comes with UFS 3.1 storage and not the earlier claimed UFS 4.0. After many users raised queries regarding the lower read and write speeds of the OnePlus 12R, the company clarified that both variants of the OnePlus 12R include UFS 3.1 storage. However, as of now, the brand has announced no compensation for those who bought this phone thinking it had UFS 4.0 storage.

In a community post, Kinder Liu, the president and COO of OnePlus, shared that “due to an error, we stated that the storage enhanced by Trinity Engine would be UFS 4.0 in some variants. I can now confirm that the storage in all variants of the OnePlus 12R is still enhanced by Trinity Engine but is actually UFS 3.1.”

All this began when some users started comparing the storage performance of the OnePlus 12R with the OnePlus 12 (review), where the scores of the OnePlus 12R were significantly lower than that of the OnePlus 12, despite having the same storage type on the 16 GB RAM and 256 GB storage variant on platforms like Facebook and X.

OnePlus has clearly mentioned that the 256 GB variant of the OnePlus 12R features UFS 4.0 storage type, which is faster and more power-efficient than the previous generation UFS 3.1 and is also slightly more expensive than the competition. Since the posts on X went viral, the company has clarified that both the 128 GB and the 256 GB variants of the OnePlus 12R feature UFS 3.1 storage.

Does it make a difference?

Yes, a phone with UFS 4.0 storage should offer slightly better performance when it comes to tasks like random read speed, and write speed, and even when it comes to tasks like app opening, a phone with UFS 4.0 will have slightly better performance compared to a phone with UFS 3.1 storage. However, these differences will be very evident, especially when compared with a phone with a better storage solution. Most flagship Android phones use UFS-type storage, while budget phones come with cheaper eMMC-type storage, lastly, Apple uses much faster and more expensive NVMe-type storage, which is mostly used on computers.
