OnePlus 13, 13R: A new dawn of trust and transparency?

OnePlus, once the darling of the tech enthusiast world known for its “flagship killer” phones and close community engagement, has been under the radar in recent years, mostly for the wrong reasons. Software glitches, controversial marketing decisions, and even hardware mishaps have shaken the faith of many loyal fans. But with the launch of the OnePlus 13 series, the company seems determined to win back your trust. And they’re not just saying it – they’re seemingly doing it, too.

OnePlus 13 series 180-day phone replacement plan

Imagine this: you drop your brand new OnePlus 13 or 13R, the screen cracks, but instead of the usual repair hassle, OnePlus simply hands you a brand new device, no questions asked. This unprecedented offer, covering everything from the screen to the motherboard for a full six months, is a bold statement of confidence in the 13 series’ build quality.

To claim a replacement, customers can visit any authorised OnePlus service centre. The service is available from January 10 to February 13, 2025. After this period, customers can still get a replacement device by purchasing an optional protection plan, OnePlus says.

But this isn’t just a one-off gimmick. It’s part of a larger initiative called Project Starlight, a Rs 6,000 crore investment focused on improving the overall OnePlus experience in India. This includes expanding service centres, streamlining customer support, and even designing features specifically for the Indian market.

Why this sudden shift?

OnePlus admits it has some making up to do. Remember the OnePlus 12R storage fiasco? Advertised with the faster UFS 4.0 storage, it actually shipped with the older, slower UFS 3.1. Then there was the OnePlus 12’s eSIM confusion, where the feature was promised and then quietly retracted. But the biggest offset was the infamous green line, which though it was—and is—not an isolated OnePlus case, OnePlus devices were probably less immune or maybe because OnePlus fans are more vocal than others.

Now, OnePlus is taking steps to address these concerns head-on. Beyond the 180-day replacement plan, they’re offering a lifetime warranty against the dreaded “green line” display issue across all their devices, old and new. This shows a commitment to long-term customer satisfaction.

Of course, actions speak louder than words. Only time will tell if OnePlus can truly regain the trust it once enjoyed. But with Project Starlight and the bold initiatives surrounding the OnePlus 13 series, the company is sending a clear message: they’re serious about listening to their fans and delivering a better, more reliable experience.

OnePlus 13, 13R quick review

Hardware wise, the OnePlus 13 and 13R look sorted. They have big and bright LTPO displays, fast Qualcomm chips, and sizeable 6000 mAh batteries. The OnePlus 13 starts at Rs 69,999 while the 13R has a starting price Rs 42,999.

The OnePlus 13 series is more than just new phones; it’s a symbol of OnePlus’s renewed commitment to quality, transparency, and customer satisfaction. Whether it’s enough to win back the hearts of disillusioned fans remains to be seen. It is certainly a step in the right direction, though.
