After News Corp, OpenAI announced another partnership to train its chatbot model, ChatGPT. The artificial intelligence research company has joined hands with Time magazine to enhance and train ChatGPT. On Thursday, the companies announced a multi-year content deal that will allow OpenAI to access current and achieved articles from over 100 years of Time’s past work. The new partnership furthers Time’s commitment to expanding global access to accurate and trusted information.
“Throughout our 101-year history, Time has embraced innovation to ensure that the delivery of our trusted journalism evolves alongside technology,” said TIME Chief Operating Officer Mark Howard.
He stated in the release, “This partnership with OpenAI advances our mission to expand access to trusted information globally as we continue to embrace innovative new ways of bringing TIME’s journalism to audiences globally.”
The partnership will also enable TIME to gain access to OpenAI’s technology to develop new products for its audiences, along with the opportunity to provide vital feedback and share practical applications to refine and enhance the delivery of journalism in ChatGPT and other OpenAI products and shape the future of news experiences.
This partnership comes after a similar tie-up between OpenAI and News Corp in May. Just like the recent one, this partnership also allows ChatGPT parent, OpenAI to access current and archived articles from all News Corp.’s outlets, including The Wall Street Journal, MarketWatch, Barron’s, The New York Post, and more.
Time Magazine has been added to the list after News Corp and Reddit. The social news website, Reddit, also announced in May that it would partner with OpenAI, allowing the company to train its AI models on Reddit content.
In the previous months, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was making headlines for saying that he wanted to build an artificial general intelligence (AGI). Discussions about the technology have been doing rounds for years, and reached new heights when ChatGPT was launched in 2022. Tech experts, including the godfather of AI Geoffrey Hinton, have often warned us about the possible dark sides of AGI. However, there are many in support of the technology and believe that it can be controlled and will ultimately benefit humanity.
In May, OpenAI co-founder John Schulman said that AGI will be here soon, but companies should work together to ensure it doesn’t go out of control. Schulman appeared on a podcast with Dwarkesh Patel and talked about a possible future with AGI, how it can be controlled, etc.
As ChatGPT gains fame, the reports have also been that the company was planning on enhancing the chatbot’s capabilities and tapping into a new market by launching a competitor to Google Search. However, Altman has denied such rumors. On the other hand, he has also confirmed that something is indeed cooking and OpenAI will be making announcements regarding ChatGPT updates soon.
