This new plan of the United States had drawn inspiration from Donald Trump’s 20-point Gaza peace plan.
United States President Donald Trump and his administration is working with Russia, in secrecy, to draft a 28-point plan to stop the war in Ukraine, reported Axios citing US and Russian officials.
This new plan of the United States had drawn inspiration from Donald Trump’s 20-point Gaza peace plan.
According to a top Russian official, Trump is hopeful about the plan.
The peace plan would include point that fall in four general categories — “peace in Ukraine, security guarantees, security in Europe, and future U.S. relations with Russia and Ukraine” — the report said citing sources.
However, what still remains unclear is how the peace plan would tackle major issues such as Russia‘s territorial control in some areas in eastern Ukraine.
US’ Steve Witkoff leading the drafting of the plan
The responsibility of drafting the Ukraine peace plan is upon the shoulder of United States’ special envoy for Peace Missions, Steve Witkoff, according to the report.
A US official said that Witkoff has discussed the plan “extensively” with Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev.
Dmitriev told Axios in an interview on Monday that during his visit to Miami from October 24-26, he spent three days with Witkoff and other officials of the Trump administration.
He also said that this time, they feel that “Russian position is really being heard” and thus, there are chances that the deal might be a success.
Shedding light on along what lines the plan is being drafted, Dmitriev said it focuses on not just the Ukraine conflict but also on Russia’s security concerns and how to restore the ties between Russia and the US.
“It’s actually a much broader framework, basically saying, ‘How do we really bring, finally, lasting security to Europe, not just Ukraine,'” Axios quoted him as saying.
A Ukrainian official confirmed that they were aware of the plan as Witkoff also discussed the plan with Rustem Umerov, Zelensky’s national security adviser, earlier this week.
The United States has also started briefing European officials about the new plan, said a US official.
This plan also comes as Trump works to end the Ukraine war after there was no outcome from his Alaska summit with Russian president Vladimir Putin.
